Recently IRL had a chance to MEeT WITH RAPPER AND PERFORMANCE ARTIST JAMES ALLISTER SPRANG. TRAINED AS AN ARTIST BUT RAPPING HIS WHOLE LIFE, JAMES' CREATIVE CAREER SPRUNG EVER SINCE HE WAS A CHILD. "I'VE BEEN IN ART SCHOOL EVER SINCE I CAN REMEMBER", HE SAYS. STARTING WITH ART CLASSES IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL THEN ART BOOTCAMP IN HIGH SCHOOL, TO THE HODGEPODGE OF ANXIOUS ARTISTS- THE COOPER UNION. JAMES HAS always BEEN IMMERSED IN A CREATIVE WORLD WHICH FEEDS HIS FASCINATION FOR creative culture. GAZR, WHOM JAMES PRESENTS AS AN EXTENSION OF HIMSELF, WAS BORN WHEN HE WAS GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE A summer RESIDENT OF A SPACE KNOWN AS BHQFU IN THE LOWER EAST SIDE OF MANHATTAN. THIS SPACE WHICH IS USED TO ENCOURAGE THE EXPANSION AND ACTUAL FOUNDATION OF ART GAVE WAY to THE DEVELOPMENT OF GAZR'S LIVE ninety MINUTE ONE MAN SHOW THAT HE RECORDED IN FRONT OF AN AUDIENCE TITLED LDNL (LIFE DOES NOT LIVE). GAZR HELD A semi-premeditated (as most rappers are, he says) LIVE RAP SHOW EVERY TWO WEEKS WHERE HE WOULD PROJECT MUSIC PLAYLISTS, WORD DOCUMENTS, AND YOUTUBE VIDEOS FROM HIS LAPTOP. JAMES' INTEREST IN LANGUAGE AND HOW IT PASSES THROUGH THE HUMAN BODY HAS LED HIM TO EXPLORE A FIELD WHERE A DIY GENERATION IS ABLE TO MERGE STYLES AND TECHNIQUES IN THEIR OWN FASHION TO CREATE SOMETHING ONE MIGHT CALL A 'WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THAT?' CLEVER, CREATIVE, AND RELATABLe Performance.

IN COLLABORATION WITH WITH HIS CREATIVE PARTNER MARVIN JORDAN, THE TWO HAVE BROUGHT TO LIFE A NU ART FAIR TITLED "BLACK MARKET". DURING NYC ART FAIR WEEK ON FRIDAY MAY 15TH, THE BITCOIN CENTER WILL OPEN ITS DOORS TO HOST THE EVENT FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY. ARTISTS INCLUDING DEVIN KKENY, GAZR, YUNG JAKE, VYLE, PRADA MANE, AND OTHERS WILL PERFORM 100 FEET AWAY FROM THE NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGE. THE LOCATION BEING A KEY ELEMENT FOR ALLISTER AND JORDAN WHERE THEY SAY THEY ARE "QUESTIONING VALUE IN A SPACE WHERE VALUE IS REDEFINED EVERY SECOND".

THE IDEA BEHIND THE EVENT IS TO SHOWCASE THE PROLIFIC MERGENCE OF ART AND MUSIC IN AN ART FAIR MODEL. "PEOPLE INVESTIGATING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN RAP AND ART CULTURE IS THIS HIGH LOW BINARY... RAP WOULD BE PERCEIVED AS THE LOW WHEREAS EVERYTHING ELSE GOING ON DURING ART FAIR WEEK IS ON THE HIGHER SPECTRUM...WE’RE NOT REINVENTING THE WHEEL BY ANY MEANS BUT WE ARE REINVENTING THE WAY IN WHICH PEOPLE INTERACT WITH THAT SITUATION." EACH SET WILL RANGE FROM 15-40 MINUTES WHERE ARTISTS WILL ALSO BE SHOWING THEIR WORK. BLACK MARKET WILL BE SURE TO OPEN EYES AND EARS, BRINGING ATTENTION TO A FLOURISHING VISUAL LANGUAGE THAT IS CLEARLY ON THE COME UP.
